Background of the Study
Workplace stress is a major occupational health issue, particularly among healthcare workers who operate in high-pressure environments (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). Prolonged exposure to stress has been linked to increased risks of hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and mental health disorders (Nigeria Centre for Disease Control [NCDC], 2024). Healthcare workers in Nigeria, especially in states like Plateau with high patient loads and resource constraints, are particularly vulnerable to workplace stress.
Healthcare workers face multiple stressors, including long working hours, staff shortages, exposure to infectious diseases, and emotional strain from patient care (Aliyu & Garba, 2024). The chronic stress experienced in such demanding environments can lead to elevated blood pressure levels, increasing the risk of hypertension and other cardiovascular complications (Usman et al., 2024).
This study seeks to investigate the relationship between workplace stress and hypertension among healthcare workers in Plateau State, examining key stressors and potential interventions to mitigate their impact.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the well-established link between workplace stress and hypertension, limited research has been conducted on the specific impact of occupational stress on healthcare workers in Plateau State (NCDC, 2024). Many healthcare professionals operate in high-pressure settings with excessive workloads, inadequate resources, and frequent exposure to critical patient cases, yet little attention is given to their physical and mental well-being (Ogunleye et al., 2024).
The prevalence of hypertension among healthcare workers in Plateau State remains undocumented, making it difficult to develop targeted interventions. This study aims to fill this gap by evaluating workplace stress levels, hypertension prevalence, and potential coping strategies among healthcare workers.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of workplace stress among healthcare workers in Plateau State.
2. To determine the prevalence of hypertension among healthcare workers.
3. To examine the relationship between workplace stress and hypertension among healthcare workers.
Research Questions
1. What are the major stressors affecting healthcare workers in Plateau State?
2. What is the prevalence of hypertension among healthcare workers in the state?
3. How does workplace stress contribute to hypertension among healthcare professionals?
Research Hypotheses
1. Healthcare workers in Plateau State experience high levels of workplace stress.
2. The prevalence of hypertension is significantly higher among healthcare workers exposed to chronic workplace stress.
3. Stress management interventions can reduce the risk of hypertension among healthcare professionals.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on healthcare workers in selected hospitals and clinics in Plateau State, examining their workplace stress levels and blood pressure status. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining medical records and self-reported stress assessments.
